“El Barrio. It was a magic Spanish phrase that fell from my father’s lips, describing a place that belonged to us, even if New York didn’t belong to us. From the ‘50s onward, it became the center culture and authenticity for Puerto Ricans and other Latinos. In the ‘70s, Now, real estate speculation is threatening to change the neighborhood so that it is barely recognizable.”

—Ed Morales

Ed Morales, long-time New York journalist and author of Living in Spanglish, returns to the neighborhood where his parents met and married. In the process, he finds that the spirit of El Barrio is still alive even as an explosion of luxury high rises loom menacingly over the neighborhood’s longtime residents.”

“Whose Barrio?” will be screened this coming Saturday, October 25th at 7pm at the Maysles Cinema as part of its series: Rent Control: NYC Documented and Imagined.

A panel will follow at 8pm featuring:

v  Co-directors Ed Morales and Laura Rivera

v  NYU Professor Arlene Dávila

v  Oscar Dominguez and Juan Haro of The Movement For Justice in El Barrio

The film will be playing at the Maysles Cinema from October 25-29.
