Religion has been a powerful political force throughout American history. When race enters the mix the results have been some of our greatest triumphs as a nation—and some of our most shameful failures. What have been the political effects of religion intermingling with race?

Mark A. Noll is a Francis A. McAnaney Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame. Most of his research and writing has dealt with subjects involving the history of Christianity and the intellectual or political history of the United States (and Canada). In 2005, Noll was named by Time Magazine as one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America.
